Abstract

This research is motivated by the phenomenon of Sundanese dialect shifts among migrant students due to the strong hegemony of urban culture in Bandung. The primary objective of this study is to analyze the influence of the cultural environment on changes in the speech styles of migrant students at Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia. The research method employed is descriptive-phenomenological qualitative, involving three students from the 2025 cohort originating from Bogor, Kuningan, and Sukabumi. Data collection was conducted through in-depth interviews and participant observation in February 2026 to capture natural linguistic dynamics. The research instruments included structured interview guides and digital field notes to ensure the accuracy of the primary data obtained. Data analysis techniques refer to the Miles and Huberman interactive model, encompassing data reduction, data display, and sociolinguistic conclusion drawing. The results show that migrant students perform linguistic convergence by adopting particles such as "teh", "mah", and "atuh" for social approval. Intonational and lexical changes were found to be more radical in informants with a significant dialectal distance from Bandung's cultural center. Factors such as the peer environment and digital media consumption are proven to accelerate identity fragmentation or "Linguistic Chameleonism" in the research subjects. These findings confirm that Bandung's urban environment functions as a dialect-standardizing engine that suppresses the authenticity of original linguistic identities. This study provides a scientific contribution to the development of sociolinguistic studies regarding the preservation of regional dialect diversity amidst the currents of educational modernization.
